The WEST Program View On Twitter Marketing

Bob Yeager, creator of  The WEST Program, is very opinionated in his views on Twitter marketing. He says:

“Twitter this and Listen UP! They DON’T Care!
Sorry, Socializing doesn’t mean shopping.”  twitterbird

Ok, Bob .

When Bob was on Twitter the other day and  noticed that all of the updates in his profile were marketing this or that, or simply placing links in the “What are you doing?” updates.

Look… stop it. If you are doing this, stop right now and get with the program. Quite a few of us have been online for some time, and we see how people get upset when you are spamming the social sites.

Here’s a thought, how about you socialize with people. Whaaat?

Yes, socialize. Isn’t it funny that the term Social Networking means:

Networking with like minded people that you would like to socialize with.

Bob lays this out real simple . It’s a little something he learned from
his buddy, Perry Belcher.

Social networks are a party, plain and simple. People are there to chat
have a good time, and share their inspirations , entertainment and have
a good laugh. For example:

A few days ago Bob was on Twitter. A friend of his was visiting and said, “I just got my first blog set up, should I be doing that Twitter thing?”

Bob  told her that she could if she wanted to become addicted, realize that she was getting absolutely no work done, have to back off for a while and go through a term he trademarked (REALLY!) Twitter Twilight.

“Twitter Twilight is just like text chatting on your cell phone. You get
so in the flow of typing short little messages, you get so lazy that you
don’t write words out completely, and then all of a sudden the phone rings.”

WHAT? Okay Bob, I get it.  We get into a socializing flow, like when we’re hanging out with people doing stuff that we love, and all of a sudden we realize that a few hours have rolled by and we’re late for dinner.

Social networks are the same, so you have to structure yourself a bit.

Only talk about what you would talk about at a party. Build relationships, meet people. You can list all of your information about your site and stuff in your profile… but be sure that looks like a cool place to hang out too.

Look, like Bob said, the social network is the party, after the party you may invite them over for a Bar B Q (i.e. your blog!) even then you will not be selling them, you’ll be providing them with valuable content that will leave them wanting for more.

As the relationship builds, they will begin to sign up for your newsletter, in a natural flow. But I also want you to realize this, your autoresponder is not the only list that you have. Every social site you are part of, video sites included; where you have friends are lists.

In your social sites, if you simply socialize with people… one day you will be working on a big promotion, and you have built a following of 1500 people or more. Then, you write a blog post with a little video. It turns out awesome, you know that everyone will love it… and it gets people to sign up for more videos which will later sell those people!

Then… you explode to your friends on the social site:

Oh Ma God… Julie… you have just got to see this cool video I
just posted on my blog…  retweet please LINK!@)

All of a sudden, after a night of restless sleep… after dreaming of your
launch and how you don’t have a list… you look at your email inbox
and it would seem that you have 325 messages saying “You have a new Subscriber!”

That my friend.. is how you chill with the social scene…according to Bob Yeager.
Look, go have fun with it, be sure to fill your profiles in with your REAL picture, your REAL name and some fun facts about you and your family. Business comes later, party in the scene a bit, figure out which of the social sites will serve you best… and get moving with the party!
